Chitwanix OS released its first version with code name Kadey Vyakur (Spiny Babbler) on September 21st 2013 on the occasion of Software Freedom Day Celebration by FOSS Nepal Community from Kathmandu, Nepal.
Chitwanix OS naming convention is based on Nepal recognizing object, place, animal, person name starting with Nepali Letters Ka (क) Kha(ख) Ga(ग) ... variation with respective version. Chitwanix OS version 1.5 Khukuri (Gurkha Blade) has been released where side-wise, Chitwanix OS is also converting into Nepali, Tharu, Newari, Gurung, Magar languages by communities.
Features:
Chitwanix OS uses primarily free and open source software with some exceptions for some proprietary software, such as plug-ins and codecs that provide Adobe Flash, Java, MP3, and DVD playback. Chitwanix OS 1.0 comes installed with a huge ton of softwares for all the purposes like:- Education, Programming, Development, Gaming, Computing and Calculations, Communications,etc. that includes LibreOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, XChat, Pidgin, Transmission and GIMP, VirtualBox, Skype, Teamviewer, Tux Games, Educational Suites, Eclipse, Android SDK, etc. Additional software that is not installed by default can be downloaded using the Chitwanix Software Center.
Chitwanix OS allows networking ports to be closed using its firewall, with customized port selection available. The default Chitwanix OS desktop environment is Cinnamon with support of many languages all over the world. The desktop environment which are included in the version 1.0 are:- Cairo Dock Environment, Cinnamon and XFCE. Chitwanix OS can also run many programs designed for Microsoft Windows (such as Microsoft Office), using the Wine software or using virtualization software (such as VMware Workstation or VirtualBox).
